Vietnam Facebooker gets 27 months behind bars for anti-state propaganda

A court in Vietnam’s southern Can Tho City on Tuesday found Doan Khanh Vinh Quang, 42, guilty of “abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the state,” by posting anti-government content on social media.

A Vietnam News Agency report cited the indictment as saying Quang had been posting articles criticizing the Party and the state's policies, defaming government officials and inciting terrorism on his Facebook page, “Quang Doan,” since 2015.

The court ruled that his action “seriously affected the political security and social order and safety.”

Last June, he took advantage of multiple protests that broke out across the country against the special economic zones (SEZ) planned by the government at the time and posted articles calling on people to participate in the demonstrations against the government, the indictment said.

Police arrested Quang in early September after monitoring his activities for some time.

Under Vietnam's Penal Code, "Abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens" is a crime carrying jail terms of up to seven years.
