Vietnam entered the quarterfinals of the regional tournament for the first time, defeating Bahrain on the Thursday match with a goal in the 88th minute. Nguyen Cong Phuong, who came off the bench late to score the goal, sent fans into a frenzy.

If Vietnam defeats Syria in the quarterfinal match, it will meet Ubezkistan or South Korea in the semifinal at 4 p.m. on August 29.

If Vietnam loses, it is out of the tournament, but fans are already happy that the team has written a new chapter in the nation’s football history.

The Asian Games is the world's second biggest multiple sports event (after the Olympics). This year’s edition, held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, has drawn 16,000 competitors and officials from 45 nations.
