ĐÀ NẴNG — A patient who suffered a stroke and was declared clinically dead for 20 minutes has been released after 10 days of treatment, doctors from Hoàn Mỹ Đà Nẵng Hospital said yesterday.

They confirmed that the patient, Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, 50, from Đà Nẵng, was taken to hospital after suffering a stroke on December 30th, but was declared dead after 15 minutes of examination.

A team of doctors spent 20 minutes trying to restart the patient’s heart before performing endoscopic surgery on his coronary artery.

This marks the first case in which doctors have saved a stroke victim after they had been declared clinically dead.

Last year, a British tourist whose right atrium (heart cavity) was punctured in a serious accident was saved after a heart operation at Đà Nẵng City General hospital.

Fisherman saved

Also yesterday, a rescue team and doctors from the Đà Nẵng-based Maritime Rescue and Search Coordination Centre No 2 (MRCC2) rescued a fisherman from Bình Định who had been taken seriously ill at sea near the Hoàng Sa (Paracels) Islands of Việt Nam.

The centre said it received an SOS call on January 8 stating that the fisherman, Huỳnh Văn Cường, 43, had started vomiting blood while working on a fishing boat from January 7th.

A rescue ship and doctors were dispatched to bring the fisherman to Đà Nẵng general hospital yesterday afternoon for further treatment. — VNS
